GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY
April 25-27, 2008
Global Youth Service Day is an annual global event that highlights and celebrates the contributions of youth to their communities through volunteer service. During Global Youth Service Day, youth around the world organize community service projects to address local needs in over 100 countries in every region of the world.
In Nebraska , Global Youth Service Day activities were coordinated by the Nebraska InterCorps Council. Jennifer Rutt, a Nebraska Thrives AmeriCorps* VISTA member with ServeNebraska - the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission, provided leadership to these efforts.
In April, Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy, representing Governor Dave Heineman issued a proclamation declaring April 25-27 to be Global Youth Service Day in Nebraska. To see this proclamation look .
A summary of activities follows below. Approximately 1,400 youth participated.

Nebraska InterCorps Council
Nebraska Thrives AmeriCorps*VISTA
ServeNebraska was named one of 75 Lead Agencies nationally by Youth Service America and received a small grant to conduct Global Youth Service activities within the state of Nebraska . The Nebraska InterCorps Council served as the lead planning coalition and decided to implement a statewide mini-grant process to involve as many youth from across the state as possible. Council members worked together to draft an Request for Applications that was released statewide, developed a scoring rubric for grant reviewing, reviewed applications, developed funding recommendations, and created a data collection form for each funded organization's events.
