Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of learning. In 2008, Read Across America Day was held on March 3, 2008.

The National Education Association (NEA) launched the Read Across America program in 1997.

In Nebraska , Read for America Day activities were coordinated by the Nebraska InterCorps Council. Annette Alohoid, an AmeriCorps member in service with CommUNITY AmeriCorps Team in Lincoln , provided leadership to these efforts.

A summary of activities is below:

To celebrate Read Across America Day, Annette received donations of new books, to which she affixed a label highlighting that they were part of the Nebraska InterCorps Council initiative. These books were then distributed to students in classes that AmeriCorps members and one AmeriCorps supervisor read to.

During Read for America Day, seven volunteers in the Lincoln area read to over 100 kids. This reading targeted young learners in home daycares, a larger daycare setting and several classes in a small private K-5 school.

The kids loved it!!

This year established a good beginning that can be built upon in the future by starting earlier and expanding the reach to other communities.
